Hilda J. Rice of Sudlersville, MD, passed away on Tuesday, November 13, 2018, at the Seasons Hospice in the Christiana Hospital in Newark, DE. She was 100 years old.
Born in Ridgely, MD on November 18, 1917, Mrs. Rice was the daughter of the late George Lewis Cherry and Ella Sue Smith Cherry. Her husband, Joseph H. Rice, died September 10, 1985. Mrs. Rice graduated from the Ridgely High School. She played the organ for church from age 14 until her mid-eighties. She was the organist for the Hillsboro-Queen Anne United Methodist Church for over 50 years. For many years, she and her husband lived in Queen Anne, MD where she had worked as a rural mail carrier and postal clerk in the Post Office. She moved to Sudlersville in 1985.
Mrs. Rice is survived by her daughter, Nancy R. Schmidt of Sudlersville; two grandsons: Hans W. Schmidt (Jennie) and Alan W. Schmidt (Brenda), both of Sudlersville; and four great grandchildren: Jacob, Tyler, Zachary, and Katrina. She was preceded in death by a brother, Roland Cherry.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, November 20th, at the Hillsboro-Queen Anne United Methodist Church in Hillsboro, MD where friends may visit from 10 until 11 before the service. The interment will be in the Greensboro Cemetery.
