James W. Merriken, Sr. of Denton, MD, passed away on Monday, April 16, 2018, at the Memorial Hospital in Easton, MD. He was 91 years old.
Born in Baltimore, MD on July 24, 1926, Mr. Merriken was the son of the late Wilbert Lacy Merriken and Edith Crane Wheeler Merriken. He was a graduate of the Nottingham Academy in Colora, MD. Mr. Merriken was a WWII veteran of the US Navy, having served in the South Pacific. After the war, he moved home to Denton where he became a carpenter and lived the rest of his life. He was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church in Denton and was a Life Member of the Denton Volunteer Fire Company. He was also a member of the Caroline American Legion Post 29 and was the last surviving original member of the Honga River Blackwater Hunting Club.
Mr. Merriken is survived by his wife, Roxanna E. Detwiler of Denton; one son, James W. Merriken, Jr. (Darlene) of Queen Anne, MD and one daughter, Gayle M. Muir (Howard) of Denton; a brother, John Merriken of Royal Oak, MD; and four nephews: Robert Merriken (Susan), David Merriken, Brian Merriken, and Bruce Merriken, all of St. Michaels, MD. In addition to his parents, Mr. Merriken is predeceased by a sister-in-law, Mary Lou Merriken.
A memorial service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, April 21st, at the Christ Episcopal Church located at 105 Gay Street in Denton where friends may visit with the family for an hour before the service. The interment will be private.
