Betty Jane Kelley

Betty Jane Kelley, of Denton, MD, died peacefully on Wednesday. January 18, 2023, the Shore Medical Center in Easton, MD. She was 85 years old. 
Born on February 17, 1937, Mrs. Kelley was the daughter of the late Oscar and Margaret (Maggie) Smith.

Betty Jane graduated from Caroline High and went on to attend University of Maryland.  After her education, she became a telephone operator and married George B. Kelley, Jr.  who preceded her in death in 1999. She and her husband owned Kelley Well Drilling.  In their spare time enjoyed working side by side creating and designing crafts and tablescapes for the various organizations they supported.  Betty was a very active member of the American Legion Post 29 Ladies Auxiliary (life member), St Luke’s Church, Federalsburg #5246 VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Veterans Cemetery Committee, and held various leadership positions in each. In addition to these voluntary rolls, her secretarially spanned many business in the area including Wayside Body Shop, Lifetime Well Drilling and 25 plus years with MD/DE Water Well Assoc.  When Betty wasn’t working or volunteering, she could be found with her friends either on the golf course or at the card table. Music was a big part of her life and enjoyed entertaining others by playing piano and singing.  

 Mrs. Kelley is survived by her daughter Bronwyn Kelley-Abare (Clif Abare) of Fort Mill, SC; sisters: Charlotte Ann Porter and Virginia Lee Kitchen; a special niece Gloria Belke and many nieces and nephews.  In addition to her parents, she is preceded by siblings: Mary Alice Bourne and Alfred Smith.

 A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 25, 2023, at 10:45 AM, at the Moore Funeral Home, P.A. located at 12 S. Second Street in Denton, where friends may call at 9:45 AM to 10:30 AM with an American Legion Ladies Aux. service at 10:30 AM. The interment will be in the MD Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery, 6827 E. New Market Ellwood Rd. Hurlock, MD.
