Cornelius Stevens “Steve” Mulder Jr., 77, passed away December 2, 2023.
Steve was born in Easton on February 13, 1946, and was the only child of Cornelius “Corny” Mulder and Bette Phillips Mulder.
Steve’s early life was spent enjoying the bounty of Maryland’s Eastern Shore, fishing and farming alongside his father. He attended high school at Charlotte Hall Military Academy in Charlotte Hall, Maryland, where he played football and baseball and was an expert marksman. He graduated in 1964.
He continued his formal education at Culver Military Academy in Culver, Indiana, then transferred to and graduated from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science in Business.
In the summer of 1968, he married his long-time sweetheart Ellen Fuchs Mulder and resumed life on the Eastern Shore. After several years serving as caretaker for Cape Centaur, fondly referred to as the “Pink Castle” in Tunis Mills, Maryland, Steve built neighboring homes for his family and widowed mother and began his 45-year residency in Cordova, Maryland.
Steve taught mathematics and technology for Caroline County Public Schools for 32 years, all of which he spent at Colonel Richardson High School in Federalsburg, Maryland. He retired in 2001.
Steve was perhaps better known for his avocation than his occupation, farming thousands of acres across four counties: Dorchester, Talbot, Caroline, and Queen Anne’s alongside his brother-in-law, Ernie Fuchs. After his retirement, he continued his involvement by providing soil management for other farmers. At home in Cordova, he nurtured his magnificent and prolific vegetable garden and orchard until the time of his passing.
An avid outdoorsman, Steve enjoyed fishing and hunting deer, turkey, and upland birds. In the fall of 1987, his 15-point buck placed second in the state. His hunting adventures introduced him to some of his favorite places and allowed him to spend time with hunting buddies—some of his favorite people.
Steve’s greatest joy was his loving family. His wife of 54 years, Ellen, preceded him in death. He is survived by daughters Molly Mulder Rusch (Matt) of Centreville and Monica Mulder Bissett (Jim) of Denton and grandchildren Sabrina, James, Lauren, Gina, Delaney, and Tessa.
Friends may visit with the family from 6 until 8pm Wednesday, December 6, 2023, at Moore Funeral Home, P.A. 12 S. 2nd St. Denton, MD. A graveside funeral service will be held at 11am Thursday, December 7, 2023, at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Easton.
