Carol D. Stockley of Denton, MD, passed away on Wednesday, February 22, 2023, at Bayleigh Chase in Easton, MD. She was 98 years old.
Born in Sharon, PA, Mrs. Stockley was the daughter of the late Edward and Florence Mae Dodge Derrenbacher. Her husband, William R. Stockley, died May 4, 1972. After graduating from Hickory High School in 1942, Mrs. Stockley worked at the Navy Department in Washington, D.C. during WWII where she met her husband, Bill. With Bill, a furniture cabinet maker, they established an antique restoration and refinishing business. Upon the death of her husband, Mrs. Stockley became active in civic affairs and was a Denton Town Commissioner from 1973 until 1980, also serving as Mayor. She was again elected to the Town Council in 2001. She also served on the Board of Directors for various organizations, including The Memorial Hospital at Easton, MD, The Mid-Shore Symphony, Adkins Arboretum, and the Delmarva Advisory Council of which she was President. She was a member of the Denton Women’s Club, the American Legion Post 29 Auxiliary, the Caroline County Democratic Club, and St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Denton where she was a choir member for many years.
Mrs. Stockley is survived by her daughter, Sharon Stockley Bond (D.K.); two sons, Burton D. Stockley (Robin) and Marc S. Stockley. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Lyle Perry Derrenbacher of Hermitage, PA and Edward Bruce Derrenbacher of Sebring, FL; her stepfather, William Lee Howard of Washington, D.C.; a sister-in-law, Shirley Derrenbacher; and two stepbrothers, William Lee Howard of Potomac, MD and Dr. Mark Howard of Virginia.
A memorial service will be held at 12 Noon on Thursday, March 9th, at the Moore Funeral Home, P.A. in Denton where friends may visit with the family from 11 to 12 before the service followed by a gathering of friends at the Museum of Rural Life for light refreshments. The interment will be private.
