Carroll G. Hetrick of Preston, MD, passed away at his home on Friday, January 31, 2025. He was 64 years old.
Born in Salisbury, MD, Mr. Hetrick was the son of Elaine Pilchard Hetrick of Preston and the late Kenneth Gene Hetrick. He spent his first 27 years living in Frederick, MD where he graduated in 1979 from Linganore High School.
He was a multifaceted horseman, and Quarter Horses were his passion. Over the years he had trained many horses, participated in shows across the country, and was a well-respected judge in both Maryland and Delaware. In the late 90’s, he attended auctioneer school in Missouri, a lesser-known skill that he was very proud of. Later in life, he took an interest in law enforcement, where he spent 20 years as a dedicated Correctional Officer at the Caroline County Department of Corrections. He retired in March of 2023. Presently, he was working part-time as a Correctional Officer at the Queen Annes County Department of Corrections. In his free time, he was a dedicated officer (Vice President), and founder of the Caroline County FFA Alumni & Supporters. Since 2015, he has helped award many scholarships and experiences to local students in agriculture. He married his loving wife, Sammi, on April 5, 2019. They enjoyed showing horses together, as well as buying, training, and selling horses at their home, Hetrick Ranch in Preston, MD.
Those who knew Carroll, knew that the highlight of his life was being a father, and most recently, a grandfather. He enjoyed spending time with his family, his horses and his beloved dogs. His quick-witted sense of humor and animated story telling will be missed by many. His large personality and social presence will not soon be forgotten.
In addition to his mother, Mr. Hetrick is survived by his wife, Sammi Hetrick of Preston; a daughter, Jamie Hetrick Helwig (Joshua) of Denton, MD; a granddaughter, Sonora Elaine Helwig of Denton; two brothers, Rick A. Hetrick (Chasity) of Preston and Brian S. Hetrick (Jennifer) of Preston; and a nephew, Wesley Hetrick of Preston.
