Born at home in Denton, MD, on August 14, 1930, Francis was the son of the late Lester Martin Hayman and Virgie Virginia (Vickery) Hayman. Francis attended Caroline High School in Denton and graduated in 1948, the last year students graduated after 11 years of school. Francis made his career working for Acme Markets for over 40 years and retired in 1989.  Soon into his career at Acme, he met the love of his life, Janet, and they married on August 31, 1957, the day after she graduated from nursing school. They celebrated 49 years of marriage.

He was also a member of the Denton Volunteer Fire Company and received the distinction as a Life Member.

Francis had a variety of interests. Back in the day, he enjoyed hunting rabbits and quail with his father and son on local farmland in Caroline County and loved taking his family fishing at Martinak State Park. He loved being outside and spent endless hours in his yard gardening his tulips and daffodils. He loved birds and had every type of birdhouse in his yard and especially loved his martin bird houses. He adored his pets of which he had many over the years. Francis was an avid, dedicated, and loyal fan of the Baltimore Orioles.
