The family of Freddie Ray Fair Sr. (Fred) of Pocomoke, Md. is saddened to announce his passing on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at the age of 92. Born on January 23, 1933 in Herd, Oklahoma, he was the son of the late Raymond E. Fair and Bernice Marie Willoughby. His wife, Phyllis Butler Fair, passed away on March 7, 2025.
In addition to his wife and parents, Fred was preceded in death by his brothers Phillip D. Fair, Carroll Fair and his sister, Glenda Adams.
Fred is survived by his daughter, Terry Fair Tribbett and her husband, David, of Denton, Md.; his son, Freddie Ray Fair Jr. (Ray) and his wife, Faye of Pocomoke, Md.; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; an aunt, Betty Kirchner and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Fred graduated from Salem High School in Salem, Illinois in 1951. After graduation, he enlisted in the Navy and served overseas in Italy and Spain. Later he was stationed in Chincoteague, Va. until 1955. During this time, he could be found at the Dream Roller Rink where he loved to roller skate. He met “his Honey” Phyllis Anna Butler from Pocomoke, Md. at a weenie roast and were married on April 16, 1955. They celebrated almost 70 years together. After Fred left the Navy, he worked for the C&P Telephone Company for 20 years. He and Phyllis then went on to own and operate Fair’s Tv, Furniture & Appliances in 1968. They sponsored a men’s slow pitch softball team that won many championships until they retired from their business in 2008.
Fred devoted his life to providing for his family. He loved farming, fishing and hunting - deer, ducks, geese, turkeys and rabbits. Even at 92, Ray made it happen so his Dad could still go flounder fishing with him. Fred led by example and lived by the motto “if you’re going to do something, do it right the first time”. He always loved westerns – Gunsmoke, Bonanza, Wagon Train and classic country music – Hank Williams. He loved to read and followed everything President Trump did. Fred was the go-to guy for free advise – whether you asked for it or not – and most of the time he was right!
Fred will truly be missed but never forgotten by those that knew him.
A combined Celebration of Life will be held for Fred and Phyllis, as they requested, on October 12, 2025. It will be on the home farm at Ray and Faye’s at 1605 Old Virginia Road, Pocomoke, Md. We will have a time to share memories starting at 2 p.m. with food to follow. Please bring your favorite stories to tell about them. Dress is casual – jeans, camo, whatever you are comfortable in. Your favorite hat is appropriate but optional.
