Georgeanna (Wildberger) Modlin, age 74, passed away on March 7, 2023, in Denton, Maryland.
Georgeanna was born in 1949 in Baltimore, MD, second child of Theodore John Wilderberger and Matilda Carrie Grieb.
She went to high school in Glen Burnie, Maryland, and worked for many years in the area of medical records management.
Georgeanna was an engaging and animated mother, and a formidable cook. Traditional meals and dinner after Sunday Mass were special events. Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners were the biggest operations—she’d start days before, selecting the turkey herself from local farms, and beginning the oversized bird 24 hours before the meal. Georgeanna was also an avid reader, nothing was too far afield for her interests, though she showed particular fondness for biographies, thrillers and crime novels.
Beyond her having a curious mind, she had a sharp—some might say wicked—sense of humor. Yet she worked consistently to make the best of a challenging situation. Most especially, she had an independent mind, and was not inclined to simply adopt other’s points of view. Whether it was about religion, politics or family dynamics, she was her own person. Georgeanna died surrounded by her family after a well-fought battle with cancer and complications from surgery.
Georgeanna was preceded in death by her parents, her elder brother Theodore Wildberger, husbands Paul Hignutt and Gene Modlin. She is survived by her brother David Wildberger of Elkridge, MD; three daughters, Marianne Scheller Smith, Samantha Scheller Calaluca and Cheri Scheller Layton, son-in-law Walter Frank Harriman; grandchildren, Brandon Scheller, Gabrielle Smith, Zachary Layton, Hailee Layton, and Caroline Calaluca, and great grandchildren Ethan, Xavier, Adam and Annabelle.
A private service for Georgeanna will be held at a later date.
