Gerald P. Garey "Jerry" Obituary

Gerald (Jerry) Percy Garey of Greensboro, MD, passed away peacefully on December 30, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was 77 years old.

Born at home in Mastens Corner, DE, Jerry was the son of the late Percy Roland Garey and Erma Shaffer Garey. He married the love of his life, Marian Ringgold Garey, on August 9, 1970, and remained just so, for 55 years.

Jerry graduated from Harrington High School in 1966 and from Towson State University in 1971. He dedicated 33 years to Queen Anne’s County Public Schools as a teacher and administrator and was also a leader in the summer migrant program before retiring in 2004. In retirement, he continued serving others by painting homes and taking on handyman projects. He also continued a family tradition of farming with his brother and nephews. A talented craftsman, he built his own black powder rifles and powder horns and founded the Choptank Muzzleloaders alongside close friends. Hunting was a way of life for him, and he shared that passion for many years as a Hunter Safety Instructor. His commitment to community was unwavering. He volunteered as a camp counselor at Camp Mardela, where he led the Outdoor Adventures Camp; participated in numerous Brethren Volunteer Service disaster relief mission trips; and served the Town of Greensboro as Commissioner and Mayor for numerous years. He was a deacon, Sunday school teacher and worship leader at The Ridgely Church of the Brethren. Above all, Jerry was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle who cherished his family. He never missed a milestone and found joy in coaching and umpiring Little League and volunteering for countless school events and activities. In addition to his wife, Marian, Jerry is survived by two sons, Nathan Garey (Michelle) of Magnolia, DE and Jeremy Garey (Julie) of Landenberg, PA; and a daughter, Erma Grimmel (Eric) of Woodbine, MD; seven grandchildren: Hannah Garey, Connor Garey, Taylor Garey, Beckett Garey, Levi Garey, Hope Grimmel, and Gage Grimmel; three brothers: Robert Garey (Linda) of Felton, DE, Larry Garey (Linda) of Houston, DE, and Billy Garey (Peggy) of Harrington, DE; and two sisters, Priscilla Morris of Harrington, DE and Juanita Melling (John) of Felton, DE. He was preceded in death by three brothers: Paul Garey, Donnie Garey, and Kenny Garey. He is also survived by beloved in-laws Stanley and Peggy Hutchison, Libby Garey and many nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends. Friends may visit with the family from 6 until 8 on Tuesday, January 6th, at the Moore Funeral Home, P.A. located at 12 South Second Street in Denton, MD.
