Helen Vogt Obituary

Mrs. Helen Mae Vogt of Denton, MD passed away on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, at the University of Maryland Shore Medical Center in Easton, MD after a courageous battle with Cystic fibrosis for many years. She was 76 years old.

She was born in Salisbury, Maryland and was the daughter of the late Herman Edward Mitchell and Kathleen Hadder Mitchell. She grew up in Berlin, Maryland and attended Stephen Decatur High School.

Helen was an LPN for the State of Maryland for five years as well as being a private sitter for many more years. She obtained her real estate license and sold property for many years and owned her own wallpaper and painting business which she had a talent for. Additionally, she did some sewing and furniture upholstery over the years. She had many talents and always found a way to get things done and done well.

In the early 1970’s, she and her husband purchased their first home in Fruitland and renovated it themselves, only to sell it so they could build a brand-new home from the ground up themselves in 1978 in Salisbury. They sold that home a year later so that they could relocate to Caroline County. They built their second house in Denton which they have resided in for the last 47 years. She and her husband did everything together. Eventually, they helped their daughter renovate her first home and later assisted in the construction of her new home. They also assisted their son in renovating a home. Helen had numerous artistic talents, she enjoyed painting classes, stained glass classes, just about any craft project, needlepoint and sewing baby doll clothes for her granddaughter and hemming pants for anyone in her family. Her husband built a pergola for her daughter’s wedding, and she decorated it beautifully, it was admired by all, as they always worked side by side together at everything. Helen also had a love of reading; her absolute favorite books were based on the Amish lifestyle.

Helen took an interest in her community. She was a Cub Scout leader for her son Michael’s troop. She was active in her children’s school PTA. For 5 years she organized a huge luncheon for the entire staff at Denton Elementary to kick off the school year for staff on a positive and thankful note. She took great pride in organizing that luncheon and was a stickler for perfection in it and looked forward to doing it every year. She was a member of the Homemakers Club and was in a couponing group for years and she could find a bargain. Money saved was money to spend on her family. She enjoyed snow skiing later in life and the community of the Seven Springs group. She volunteered at Saint Benedicts /Elizabeth’s church bazar for many years preparing and sorting items for days. She looked forward to that every year and enjoyed the relationships she made there. She was the only parent who helped her children and other children in complete the famous “100 questions” so the group would complete the requirements for confirmation. It took three weekends at the Benedictine School library to do so, as the questions had 6 parts to many of them. Her children have never forgotten this and are grateful for her help and determination.

Helen very much enjoyed traveling when they could, there was a lot of time spent tent camping which had its challenges. In 1985, she and the family ventured across the United States camping and visiting national parks from Maryland to California and back over 3 weeks, making memories that have lasted a lifetime for her children. Later she and her husband traveled up to Canada along the coast of Nova Scotia which she particularly enjoyed. They stayed in many little bed and breakfasts along the way, allowing her to make friends along the way.

Throughout life she had a very special relationship with her little sister that she waited 10 long years for after having 3 little brothers whom she also loved very much! She and her sister were best friends and one another’s confidants. She enjoyed shopping trips to Pennsylvania with her sister, their mother and her daughter, and eventually having a grandchild tag along too. In her final days she was surrounded by her loving siblings, which brought her comfort.

Her greatest joys in life were her husband, their children and grandchildren. She was happily married for 56 years to her soulmate Leonard who fondly referred to her as his Princess even in her last days, which made her smile and say, “I Know.” She was overjoyed with her children and especially her grandchildren Kyle, Garrett and Emily. She provided daycare for all her grandchildren, but did not see it as a burden, but a joy to spend as much time with them as she could. She and her husband provided them with the greatest enjoyment playing on the rope swing, or the zip line in the back yard, to swimming in the pool or jumping on the trampoline. There were many well-loved adventures playing down by the creek behind her home, kayaking and lots of walks with Mom-mom and bike rides. There were also many day trips to story time, numerous parks and playgrounds, the zoo and even the nail salon. There was nothing she would not do for her grandchildren or loved ones.

Helen is survived by her husband of 56 years, Leonard F. Vogt of Denton; a daughter, Annette M. Speas (Bill) of Greensboro, MD; a son, Michael L. Vogt (Jennifer Basil) of Denton; two brothers, Edward Mitchell (Dottie) of Willards, MD and Wayne Mitchell (Mary Jane) of Pocomoke, MD; one sister, Teresa Riggin (Raymond) of Snow Hill, MD; and three grandchildren: Kyle Speas, Emily Speas, and Garrett Vogt. She is also survived by her cherished friend Connie Fletcher who meant the world to her and was there in her last days to provide comfort and prayers. Additionally, she is survived by her longtime friend Bette Shull whom she also had a special friendship with. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Herman Mitchell and a nephew David Mitchell.

She will be especially missed by her husband, children and grandchildren who will celebrate her memory at every opportunity as she was loved beyond measure. Friends may call from 6 until 8 on Thursday evening at the Moore Funeral Home, P.A. located at 12 South Second Street in Denton.
