Iris Loretta McManus Slipper of Stevensville, MD, went home to be with her Lord Jesus at 91. Surrounded by the love of Christ and her family, she passed peacefully at 10:52pm Friday, May 22, 2026 as a result of a pontine stroke.
Iris was born in Camden, S.C. on February 11, 1935, the daughter of WC and Margaret Evelyn (Branham) McManus. She graduated as Valedictorian of Camden High School. On April 8, 1954, she married the love of her life, James L. Slipper, Jr. Iris’ life was built on and defined by two critical relationships, her love for God and her love for family, both learned at her mother’s knee. As a young child, she went to the field to seek solitude with and guidance from God, a walk of faith that continued, though the fields changed. Being one of seven children and the oldest daughter, a ‘loving momma’ came naturally and was carried into every aspect of her life. Her door was open to a stranger, but once in, they became family. Iris led by example and believed anything worth doing is worth doing right the first time. Along with being a military wife and homemaker, she provided her children the necessary skillsets to succeed in life; worked 25yrs. in banking, mortgage loans, and farm loans; and found time for her passions. She was an avid reader, meticulous seamstress, and a God gifted artist, who honed her skills in oil palette work with a knife under the tutelage of a German master.
She is survived by her sons Michael E. Slipper and Wm. Cary Slipper (Linda) and special grandson Ryan Khari Slipper; daughters Deborah E. Slipper and Donna M. Slipper Moran (Sean); granddaughters AnnMarie Pagoria and Jessica L. Pagoria; two great-grandchildren; sister Patricia Elaine Brown (Huey); and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; loving husband of 57 years, James L. Slipper, Jr.; and siblings, Richard E. McManus, Sylvia R. Harold, Rebecca L. Trapp, Carolyn Davenport, and Marilyn Revis.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 11, 2026 at Moore Funeral Home, 12 S Second Street, Denton, MD. Visitation will be at 10:00 AM and a Celebration of Life at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at Kingsley Cemetery, Old Dominion Road, Chester, MD. The Reverend Jeff Pearson of THE BRIDGE Church will officiate.
