Janet Baker Obituary

Janet C. Baker, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, artist, pastor, and faithful servant of God, passed peacefully on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at the home of her daughter in St. Cloud, Florida. She was 82.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Janet was the daughter of the late Walter Fredrick Grundman and Norma Marie Dittmar Grundman. She was preceded in death by her first husband, William E. Taylor (1998), and her second husband, Michael Melfa III (2005). She is survived by her devoted third husband, James Ormand Baker of Denton, whom she married on May 14, 2011.

Janet's life was a living testimony of love, creativity, and unwavering faith. A gifted artist, she owned and operated Janet Baker’s Fourth Street Gallery in Denton and was honored as one of the Top Ten Artists on the Delmarva Peninsula. Her artwork was more than expression—it was ministry, touching the hearts and souls of many who encountered it.

Beyond her art, Janet also dedicated herself to caring for others through the Taylor House Assisted Living near Denton, which she operated from 1988 to 2011. She was a compassionate leader and caregiver, providing not only physical comfort but spiritual guidance to many under her care. A devoted and faithful member of Ames United Methodist Church in Hobbs, near Denton, Janet was a passionate follower of Jesus Christ. Through her art, her ministry, and her daily life, she led countless people to know the love and grace of the Lord. She was a true pastor at heart, ministering to everyone she met with encouragement, wisdom, and the unconditional love that reflected her deep faith. Janet was, simply put, one of the most loving women ever created. Her warmth, kindness, and strength left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her.

She is survived by her daughter, Gloria Jean Young of St. Cloud, FL; five grandchildren: Kristen Butler (Travis), Jessica Larmann (Chris), Brian Shultz, Taylor McNeil (Kaitlyn), and Meagan Rice; ten great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by her sisters, Gloria Dzambo (Don) of Ocean Pines, MD, and Jodie Hawk (Gary) of Glen Burnie, MD. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Bonnie Rice, and a grandson, Shane McNeil.
