John F. Buchanan, Sr. of Millsboro, DE, formerly of Denton, MD, passed away on Friday, May 24, 2024, at the Harrison House Senior Living in Georgetown, DE. He was 82 years old.
Born in Claymont, DE on March 6, 1942, Mr. Buchanan was the son of the late Melvin Fleming Buchanan and Frances Johanna Berg Buchanan. He was a graduate of Claymont High School.
After high school, Mr. Buchanan joined the US Navy, fulfilled his dream of becoming a Naval Aviator and a test pilot before leaving the Navy. For a time, he flew in agriculture aviation and fought forest fires in NJ, working for Doweston Aero. He also owned and operated a chicken farm and had worked for Rick Breeding in Denton. Mr. Buchanan was a member of the VFW and American Legion in Millsboro, Delaware. His hobby was building model trains and model airplanes. His two passions in life were flying and, most of all, his family.
Mr. Buchanan’s first wife, Carolyn Louise Phillips Buchanan, passed away May 10, 1996. He is survived by his second wife who he married July 14, 2001, Joan E. Whitelock Buchanan of Millsboro, DE; a son, John F. Buchanan ll of Bethlehem, MD; a daughter, Barbara J. Hodges (Dusty) of Midland, TX; a stepson, Edward Whitelock (Katherine) of Barnesville, GA; five grandchildren: Jonathan Buchanan (Kelly), Grace Buchanan, Adam Hodges, Benjamin Hodges (Elizabeth), and Logan Hodges; and seven great grandchildren: Drake, Kennedy, Kambri, Kaden, Kadence, Kenzie, and Kreed.
Funeral services will be held at 2 PM on Thursday, May 30th, at the Moore Funeral Home, P.A. located at 12 South Second Street in Denton where friends may call from one until two before the service. The interment will be in the Denton Cemetery.
