Joseph “Pops” States, born November 29, 1950, in Easton, Maryland, passed away on March 8, 2026. Joe was a proud Marine, Vietnam veteran, and a devoted father, brother, and grandfather.
Joe served his country honorably in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. His military service was a point of great pride throughout his life. Following his time in uniform, he remained closely connected to the veteran community and was a member of numerous veterans’ organizations. He carried with him the values of service, loyalty, and brotherhood that defined his time in the Marine Corps.
Known affectionately as “Pops,” Joe loved his family deeply and enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, and extended family. He will be remembered for his strong presence, sense of humor, and the many stories he shared with those around him.
Joe was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Faith Tomsa States; his parents, Thomas Wilson States and Irma May States (Startt); and his brothers, Jon States and Donnie States.
He is survived by his children: Michael Hensley (Tiffany) of Virginia; Tiffany States (Matt) of Federalsburg; Deanna Meninger (Matt) of Hurlock; and his favorite child, Lillie States. He is also survived by his brothers, Bruce States (Harriet) of Bethlehem and Kenny States (Sharon) of Federalsburg, along with many special nieces, nephews, and grandchildren who will cherish his memory.
The viewing-visitation will be on Friday, March 13 from 11 to 11:45 at Moore Funeral Home in Denton, Maryland. Funeral service will begin at 11:45. Burial will follow at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Hurlock, Maryland.
Joe’s life was marked by service, dedication to family, and pride in his country. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by those who loved him.
