Katherine Barton Johnson

     Katherine Barton Johnson of Chevy Chase, MD, formerly of Centreville, MD, passed away at her home on Friday, August 28, 2026. She was 93 years old.

     Mrs. Johnson was born in Easton, MD on October 16, 1932. She was the daughter of the late William Edward Barton and Katherine Wilson Barton.

     In 1951, Mrs. Johnson graduated from Bradford Jr. College in Haverhill, MA. She then received her BA from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Chapel Hill, NC in 1953 where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi (Pi Phi) sorority. From 1953 until 1967 she served as an intelligence officer for the Central Intelligence Agency. In 1962, Mrs. Johnson married her husband, Marshall P, Johnson, who passed away December 23, 2007.

     Mrs. Johnson was a member of the Jr. League of Washington (JLW) and the Board of Lady Visitors at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C. She was also a long-time member of the Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase. In addition, she had owned part of the Southwind Development on Kent Island when it was still a farm.

     Mrs. Johnson is survived by several family members including her cousin, James Barton of Queen Anne, MD, who faithfully managed her affairs in her later years.

     A graveside committal service will be at 11am on Wednesday, September 23rd, at the Barton family lot in the Chesterfield Cemetery in Centreville.
