Lawrence Roger Schmick died peacefully on May 16, 2023 after a brief illness. He was 98 years old. Mr. Schmick was born April 5, 1925 in Cambridge, Maryland. The son of the late Jacob A. and Amelia Ruth Goehringer Schmick. He was raised on the family cantaloupe farm in Preston, MD. He graduated from Preston High School in 1942. He was drafted and entered into the U. S. Army on February 21, 1946, and completed basic training at Fort Knox. He served in the U.S. Army in World War Two and was discharged on April 7, 1947 at the rank of corporal. During his service, he received the American Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. After his stint in the U. S. Army was completed, he attended Goldy Beacom college and graduated with a degree in accounting and business administration in 1949. He went to work at Nagel Farm Service and was a highly valued employee of the Nagel family for about 40 years before retiring in 1987.
Mr. Schmick married the late Madeline Wheatley Schmick on April 14, 1956 and they had 3 children. They made their home in Preston, MD. The family enjoyed an abundance of family trips including a yearly vacation in Ocean City, MD. Madeline preceded him in death on January 20, 1979. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Ruth, Frieda, Bertha Anne, Sherman, Ellen, Martina, Glenn, and Margaret. In 1980 he married his second wife, Viola Schmick who preceded him in death in January.
Mr. Schmick was an avid golfer and was proud to have hit a hole-in-one five times. He enjoyed gardening and always had an array of fresh vegetables planted in a home garden. He also planted an abundance of tulips in his backyard and was known to share beautiful tulip bouquets with his family and neighbors. He was quite the bowler and was a member of a team at the Seaford Bowling Lanes. He enjoyed hosting bridge card game parties at his and Madeline’s home in Preston, MD and in his later years working on puzzles and was known as the puzzle king in his community. Lawrence was a lifelong member of Immanuel Church in Preston where he served 15 years as a church officer.
Mr. Schmick is survived by his two daughters, one son, 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Mr. Schmick was loved by everyone he met and will be sorely missed by his family and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 22 at 11 am with visitation from 10 am until 11 am at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 242 Main Street, Preston, MD. The interment will be private.
