Mary Ellen Wise

     Mary Ellen Wise of Denton, MD, passed away on Friday, July 6, 2018, at the University of MD Shore Medical Center in Easton, MD (Memorial Hospital). She was 79 years old.

     Born in the Easton, MD, hospital on April 14, 1939, Mrs. Wise was the daughter of the late Thomas Clyde Ellwanger and Mary Orme Ellwanger. While she lived most of her life in Caroline County, MD, she graduated in 1957 from Milford High School followed by a degree in Home Economics from the University of Delaware in 1961. She taught in both Baltimore County Schools as well as at North Caroline. She was a faithful member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church and was a member of the Deborah Circle. During her 79 years she managed to be many things to many people: a firm but fun-loving mother; a get-down-on-the-floor-with-you grandmother; a wonderful wife and traveling companion; a world-class seamstress for marching bands, relatives and others; and a consummate volunteer for causes such as Project Read, St. Luke’s and others. In addition, many were welcomed into her home to bask in her calm demeanor and quick laugh.

     Mrs. Wise is survived by her husband, Hon. J. Owen Wise of Denton; her daughter, Elizabeth “Beth” Wise (Michael Vaughan) of Washington, D.C.; her son, J. Steven Wise (Amy) of Annapolis, MD; her brother, Thomas C. Ellwanger (Ellen) of Accokeek, MD; and four grandchildren: J. Samuel Wise, Owen T. Wise, Declan C. Vaughan, and Griffin O. Vaughan.

     A visitation will be held from 6 to 8pm on Monday, July 9, at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Denton. Funeral services will be held at 11am on Tuesday, July 10th at St. Luke’s. Rev. Karen Handy will officiate. If friends wish to send memorial donations, the family suggests sending them with a notation “In memoriam for M.E. Wise” to the St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 100 S. Fifth Ave., Denton, MD 21629.
