Mary Ellen Leaverton of Centreville, MD passed away peacefully on Wednesday July 1, 2026 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was 89 years old.
Born in Easton, MD on June 3, 1937 to the late Garland Taylor Swann and Georgia Rachel Ewell, Mary Ellen was the oldest of five children. She attended Easton High School where she played on the Basketball, Volley ball and Field hockey teams. She graduated in 1955 and remained close to many of her high school friends over the years. They enjoyed lunches together and were often seen touring the Talbot County countryside reminiscing about "how things used to be". She worked as a secretary and switchboard operator for Maryland Credit Finance and Maryland National Bank from 1955 until 1961.
Mary Ellen married Franklin Reed Leaverton on March 25, 1960. She was a devoted farmer's Wife, Mother and Grandmother. She was a founding member of the Wye Mills Homemakers Club, a strong supporter of the Queen Anne's County fair and has been a member of the Wye Mills United Methodist Church since 1961. Mary Ellen loved to be among family and friends. She often hosted the large Swann family gatherings, loved to cook for hunting parties and guides, college students and international guests, treating them all as if they were members of her family.
Mary Ellen is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Reed Leaverton; two sons, Keith(Susan) of Trappe and Kevin of Centreville; two grandchildren Andrew (Jenna)and Erin (Cory); and five great grandchildren: Jack, Evan, Emma, Adam and Mia; siblings, Garland (Rosemary), Lemmie, Shirley, and Jill (Mike), and many nieces and nephews. Mary Ellen is predeceased by her parents, a sister-in-law Renee Swann and a brother-in-law Mike Boyle.
Funeral Services will be private for family only. A public Celebration of Life will be held at 1 pm on Sunday, July 19th, at the Cordova Volunteer Fire Company Firehouse.
