On November 23, 2020 Rudi Miller, 64, of Cordova, MD (formerly Annapolis) passed away at the University of Maryland Shore Medical Center in Easton.
Rudi will most be remembered for his kindness towards others, his innate ability to make every person he met feel immediately at ease, and his quintessential mustache. He acquired his affable personality as a young man while working alongside his father, “Scotty”, at the Miller Texaco Service Station on West Street in Annapolis. Here he learned that honesty and respect for others was the true essence of one’s reputation which carried him throughout his life. He was a 1974 graduate of Annapolis High School, where he was a three-year starter on the varsity soccer team, played in a Christian rock band, and was an involved member of Young Life. His collegiate career spanned two institutions - Anne Arundel Community College and Frostburg State University—where he earned an athletic scholarship, making him the first person in his family to attend college.
For the past 40 years, he served the Annapolis community’s insurance needs. He began his career at Jack Martin and Associates. He later became the owner of Rudolph S. Miller and Associates and Farmer’s Insurance of Annapolis, working closely with his son, Andrew and his longtime partner Christopher Heer. A devoted husband and father, Rudi loved coaching his children’s sports teams. He was the ultimate sports dad, whose encouragement and distinctive cheering style could be heard by all. He could often be caught happily belting out Eric Clapton and Jackson Browne tunes while woodworking, gardening, or improving his beloved Boston Whaler. Known as the “walking man” by his “granddogs” Churchill and Bailey, Rudi soaked up the Annapolis sun on long walks with his favorite greyhound and black lab. However, Rudi’s greatest joy came simply from spending time with his family and friends. Remembered for his selfless nature, magnetic personality, and booming laughter, Rudi will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched.
He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years Leslie; his daughter, Lindsay Chaney (James Keven) of London, England; his son, Andrew Miller (Sara) of Annapolis; and his two siblings Wayne Miller (Donna) of Edgewater, MD and Kim Chaney (Charles) of Churchton, MD. He is predeceased by his father, Rudolph S. Miller, Sr. and mother, Jo-Ann (Miller) Demshak.
Due to COVID-19, a public viewing will not be held at this time. A waterside celebration of his life will occur in the spring/summer of 2021 - private invitations to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Rudi’s memory to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation: by phone 410-268-8816, or mail to Chesapeake Bay Foundation Attn: Membership Department 6 Herndon Ave. Annapolis, MD 21403.
Until we meet again…
“If I could reach the stars
I’d pull one down for you
Shine it on my heart
So you could see the truth
That this love I have inside
Is everything it seems…”
