Shirley Elaine (Startt) Callahan of Denton, MD passed peacefully into our Lord’s arms on Sunday, September 24, 2023, at Compass Hospice. She was 96 years old.
Born and raised in Easton, MD, Shirley was the only child of the late Edward Vincent Startt and Ruth Irene (Van Fleet) Startt.
Shirley graduated from Easton High School and Mount St. Mary’s University. She married William Edward “Ed” Callahan, Sr. on December 27, 1945. They settled on the family farm in Denton and raised four sons.
Shirley spent many years as an employee of the Caroline County Board of Education as a substitute teacher, instructional assistant, and finishing her career as secretary at Denton Elementary School. An avid sports fan, Shirley loved rooting for the Orioles and her beloved Ravens. She enjoyed traveling, visiting with friends, reading, knitting, and crocheting.
Shirley is survived by her four sons: William, Jr. “Bill” (Nancy) of Laurel, DE, Carroll, Sr. “Chuck” (Ruth Ann) of Ridgely, Mark (Pam) of Ridgely, and David (Barb) of Denton; her grandchildren, Doug Collins and Terri Collins of Laurel, DE, Carroll, Jr. “Carl” (Kaki) Callahan of Preston, Kelley (Pete) Thomas of Ridgely, Mark Callahan of Ridgely, and Ryan (Taylor) Callahan of Denton; five great grandchildren and one great great grandchild, She was predeceased by her loving husband and her beloved grandson, Adam Callahan.
A memorial service will be held at 11 AM on Friday, September 29th, at the Moore Funeral Home, P.A. in Denton where friends may visit with the family from 10 until 11 before the service. The interment will be private in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Easton.
In lieu of flowers, if friends wish to send a donation in memory of Mrs. Callahan, it was her wish that donations be made to St. Benedict’s Roman Catholic Church, PO Box 459, Ridgely, MD 21660 or to Compass Hospice, 160 Coursevall Dr., Centreville, MD 216178.
