Stella Cole Obituary

Stella Kathleen Shaffer Cole of Greensboro, MD, formerly of Denton, MD, passed away at home in the arms of her loving family, early Tuesday morning. She was 99 years old.

Born at home in Oil City near Denton, Mrs. Cole, (or “Micey", “Katty”, “Kathleen” or “Stella”…you would be put on notice that she did not like to be called “Stella”), or “Auntie” as she was known by her family and friends, was the daughter of the late John H. Shaffer and Carrie M. Hostetler Shaffer. Her husband, William H. Cole, Jr., known as Colie, died May 12, 1989.

Auntie was a 1940 graduate of Caroline High School in Denton. She was so proud to wear her high school ring, she still had it on when she passed. She would be excited to share her high school fight song at the drop of a hat. She had been a seamstress for Rob Roy in Ridgely, sewing button holes on boys’ cowboy shirts. She loved talking about a visit to the factory from Roy Rogers. She retired in the 1960s. Spending time with family and friends brought her great joy. She was a lifelong member of the Denton Church of The Brethren. She loved her church and called it her second home. She loved Camp Mardela, loved the Orioles, especially the Cal Ripken, and loved to go on trips, traveling to Alaska, Hawaii, Australia, Israel, New Zealand and many other places. “Let’s go on a trip!” was an exclamation often heard from Auntie. She loved her country! She would say, “We live in the best country in the world!” and would often break out in song - “God Bless America”, “My Country Tis of Thee”, well, she was known to break out into all kinds of song!

Auntie is survived by Marty and Zelie Collison of Greensboro, and their children: Dennis, Angie, Judy, Art, Brian, Sara, Zelie Mae, and Zeb. In addition to her husband Colie, she was preceded in death by her twin girls, Bonnie Lou, and Connie Sue. Her family is reunited now.

Funeral services will be held at 1 PM on Sunday, March 20th, at the Denton Church of The Brethren on Seventh Street in Denton where friends may call from 12 until 1 before the service. The interment will be in the Denton Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please send memorial donations to The Denton Church of The Brethren, PO Box 484 or to Camp Mardela, PO Box 460, Denton, MD 21629.
