Stewart Lee Butler of Delmar, Maryland passed at his home surrounded by loved ones on Monday, March 10, 2025. Did he go out demanding root beer and lime snow cones? You bet. He was 80, and if he wanted a cold, frosty Modelo beer, he would get a cold, frosty Modelo beer.
He was born in Greensboro, Maryland on October 10, 1944, a Libra, but he didn’t believe in that nonsense. He was the son of the late Frederick Lee Butler and Elnora Pauline Butler.
Stewart grew up and worked on a farm. He said he got up at 4 AM, milked the cows, and walked to school (according to him) in the snow, uphill, both ways. Fast forward to the teen years, something about taking an arrow to the teeth, and that’s why he had a partial plate. Eventually, he met a young lady, Emma Pepper, at a Buddy Dean Sock Hop and they wed. They had two children, Hall and Kendra. Once you have made the perfect child, there’s no need to have more (that’s right Kendra is the one writing the obituary, haha Hall). Emma and Stewart shared 48 blissful years.
Stewart proudly served his country for 22 years in the U.S. Navy, doing five tours in Vietnam. After his stint in the Navy, he vowed not to go back on the water. Cruise? No. Swimming? No. Water Park? Definitely no. Maybe fishing, but on land. After retiring from the Navy, he taught electronics and engineering at Calvert County Schools for 22 ½ years. After retiring again, he deejayed weddings, hosted karaoke events, and dabbled in Standard Bred horse racing.
He coached Little League, high school football, and girls’ high school basketball. He also coached many VICA competitions for Calvert Vo Tech.
As far as education goes, Stewart had a Master’s Degree and self-proclaimed good ole common sense—not tech savvy, but all the nontech savvy one could want.
After the passing of his beloved wife, Emma, he began a new chapter in his life. Fate, or rather an internet dating site, led him to meet a lovely lady named Karen. Soon the pair were married and settled into a home together in Delmar, raising their cute dog, Ginger. They spent seven and a half wonderful years together before his passing.
Stewart is survived by his wife Karen W. Butler; two children: Hall Butler (Nancy) and Kendra English (Scott); five grandchildren: Zachary, Claire, Seth, Colin, and Tess; four brothers Jerome Butler (Lynne), Deweese Butler, Frederick Butler (Juliana), and Robert Herron (Kat); two sisters Cindy Anderson (Edward), and Lori Wilson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife Emma Butler.
The family will host a celebration of life on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, at Grace Seaford Church, 805 Atlanta Road, Seaford, DE 19973 beginning at 1:00 pm.
Memorial donations should be sent to Coastal Hospice, https://www.coastalhospice.org/ or Vietnam Veterans of America, https://vva.org/https://vva.org/.
