Thomas Eigenbrode Obituary

Thomas (Tommy, Tom) Russell Eigenbrode, 75, passed away peacefully with friends and family by his side on February 27,  2023.

Tom is survived by his wife, Ebba Misla of Kissimmee, FL; two daughters shared with Patricia Liberto of Lewes, DE: Stacie Clegg of Leeds, England and Trisha Canuso of Garnet Valley, PA; stepchildren Orlando (“Dito”) Misla and Bianca (Devon) Torres of Kissimmee, FL.

His grandchildren were his pride and joy and he often referred to them as his "greatest accomplishment.” Tom is survived by Teagan, Chase, and Cole Clegg of Leeds, Avery Canuso of Garnet Valley, and Milan and Eero Torres of Kissimmee.

Tom is survived by four siblings: Betty Ann Armenio of Detroit, MI; Robert (Linda) Eigenbrode of Greenwood, DE; Kathy (William) Ghory of Charlotte, NC; and Linda (Philip) Blann of Cordova, MD. In addition to aforementioned immediate family, Tom also leaves behind his close cousin Jeanette Stuehler (“Jay”), 6 nieces, 4 nephews, 7 great nieces and 6 great nephews.

Tom is preceded in death by parents, Russell and Anna Eigenbrode and brother-in-law, George Armenio Sr.

Tom was born in 1947 to the late Russell and Ann Eigenbrode in Denton, MD and was the 3rd of five siblings. Tom reflected on his childhood with great pride, working hard on the family farm from an early age, and later working at the local supermarket while attending North Caroline High School’s class of 1966. Tom played baseball on the local Rotary team that won the Little League Championship, he was the only player that could hit a home run and rebuild a tractor engine at twelve years old.

Tom enlisted in the United States Air Force shortly after graduating high school, at just 19 years old. He served in the US Air Force for 4 years, including 1 year overseas in Vietnam where he “distinguished himself by outstanding achievement as a Security Policeman at Phan Rang Air Base,” which was consequently the most notable commendation received during his tour of duty.

Tom received several medals / awards including (but not limited to) the following: National Defense Service Medal, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Air Force Commendation and Good Conduct Medal, which are now titled Air and Space. Tom was honorably discharged in 1971, at which point he began his civilian life in Frederica, DE.

Knowing a good opportunity when he saw one, Tom used savings to purchase a used carpet cleaning machine that was listed for sale in Dover, DE.  This was the start of Superior Carpet Cleaning & Janitorial. Tom managed and maintained a successful cleaning business by providing exceptional, hands-on customer service for over 45 years.

Tom was well liked and respected both personally and professionally. He had such a charming personality, even-keeled disposition, and an appropriately ornery sense of humor. Tom had a magnetic spark, he could carry on a conversation with a complete stranger, as he often did. A conversation that usually started with his signature phrase, “what’s kickin chicken?” An acquaintance would become his friend for life within minutes, his genuine kindness and light heartedness was contagious and welcomed by all that had the opportunity to meet him.

Tom moved to FL in 2017 to enjoy warmer weather in retirement.  Living life to the fullest, he refused to let late health obstacles interfere. He fought prostate cancer and battled with MDS cancer as long as he could, but after five years he was ready to rest in peace. Tom’s sense of humor, charismatic charm, positivity, and light will live on within those that had the pleasure of knowing him.
