Walter Robert Witt, Sr. of Denton, MD, passed away at the UM Shore Medical Center in Chestertown, MD after a brief illness. He was 84 years old.
Born in Annapolis, MD on April 18, 1936, Mr. Witt was the son of the late Robert Wheatley “Buck” Witt and Zelie Frances (Cook) Witt. Mr. Witt served in the US Army from 1957 until 1959. Starting in 1960, he had been a landscaper at the Armed Forces Retirement Home (formerly The Old Soldiers’ Home) in D.C., retiring in 1991. He moved to Denton in 1993 and was a member of the Denton Church of the Brethren.
Mr. Witt is survived by three daughters: Zelie R. Collison (Marty) of Greensboro, Mary Jo Edens (Dave) of Pelzer, SC and Alice E. Cole of Denton; one son, Walter Robert “Robby” Witt, Jr. (Terry) of Shady Side, MD; a sister, Mae Bissett of Edgewater, MD; 17 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. He is also survived by a special friend, Lynn Towers of Denton. He is preceded in death by a son, Jay Christian Arthur Witt; a daughter, Julia Frances Witt; a brother, Richard Dale Witt; and a sister, Iva Marie Kennedy.
A memorial service will be held at 12:30 PM on Saturday, January 23rd, at Camp Mardela on Deep Shore Road in Denton, where friends may visit, socially distant, masks required, with the family for one hour prior. Please dress appropriately as the service is outside and there is no heat nor are there bathrooms available. The interment will be at a later date at his childhood church cemetery in Mayo, MD.
